Termites are the core of my current body of work. I am working with termite-eaten wood to investigate comparative patterns between termite-marked and human-marked wood. More specifically, I am working with a the West Indian Drywood Termite, cryptotermes brevis. This invasive termite is the termite that lives in our houses. Originally from the Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest desert on earth, these are the only termites that can survive on the low-moisture, kiln-dried wood in our built environment. My work tracks their existence from the desert, travelling on the ships of early European colonizers of the Americas, and their patterns of infestation within South Florida communities. Termite damage becomes a record of loss, movement, adaptation, and shared environments.
